TD Ameritrade clients appeared to take some profits in multiple names during the period. Oil companies were popular sells with ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), BP  PLC (ADR) (NYSE: BP), National-Oilwell Varco Inc. (NYSE: NOV), and Transocean LTD (NYSE: RIG) all net sold. Oil prices traded near three-year highs on higher global demand and possible OPEC-led production cuts. COP and BP both traded at multi-year highs, while NOV and RIG reached 52-week highs, enticing clients to take profits in all four names. Alcoa Corp. (NYSE: AA) traded at levels not seen since before the financial crisis following proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, and was net sold. For the third month in a row, Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) was net sold after CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress regarding the misuse of user data and a beat on earnings.

An issue of Transocean LTD (NYSE:RIG) debt rose 2.5% as a percentage of its face value during trading on Thursday. The debt issue has a 6.8% coupon and is set to mature on March 15, 2038. The debt is now trading at $85.45. Price moves in a company’s debt in credit markets often predict parallel moves in its share price.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

This was one of those quarters where Transocean's (NYSE:RIG) results aren't necessarily reflective of the company's accomplishments. Even though Transocean posted yet another quarterly loss, the company completed a major acquisition and netted some notable contract wins. These won't show up on the financial statements for a while, but they are indicative of a company poised to do better in the future.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo, Jason Hall, and Tyler Crowe]

The good news is spending is starting to bounce back in some segments, including offshore. Transocean (NYSE:RIG) recently pointed out that offshore investments in the first half of 2018 actually exceeded total 2016 offshore spending, and full-year 2018 spending is expected to be about 50% higher than last year. But unlike shale development, which can lead to new production in weeks, it's going to take years for new offshore spending to bear results.

Three stocks to hedge against an economic slowdown

The Federal Reserve painted a more somber economic picture this week, and one money manager said its outlook is on the money.

"You just look around the world and you see everything slowing down and we've been an island," Ron Weiner, managing director and partner at RDM Financial Group, told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Thursday. "It just doesn't look like there's a great amount of upside around the globe so I think that's going to hurt the U.S. to some extent."

Global and U.S. economic growth is expected to decelerate in 2019, according to the International Monetary Fund, with the U.S. likely to experience its slowest rate in three years.

To hedge against an economic slowdown, Weiner is betting on sectors with disruptive technologies and stocks.

Biotech boom

"Traditional health care would be the pharma stocks – we don't think that's going to be the place to go," Weiner said. "Biotechnology is really the future and that's what's probably going to save the health-care system -- when we can find ways of killing cancer without radiation and chemo."

The IBB biotechnology ETF has outpaced the S&P 500 this year with gains of more than 16 percent. It has risen 426 percent over the past 10 years, far better than the S&P 500's 271 percent increase.

"That's the future so we like companies like Illumina," he said.

Genome sequencing company Illumina has rallied nearly 30 percent in the past 12 months, roughly five times the increase by the S&P 500.

Financial breakout

Financial stocks have underperformed the market, but Weiner sees an overdue bounce coming to the group driven by cheaper valuations and increased capital return through buybacks and dividends.

PayPal, in particular, should break out further, he said.

"Companies like PayPal that are in the processing of payments — in a lot of ways, they're the future," he said. "Find financials like PayPal that are going to do quite well going forward."

PayPal has surged 24 percent this year, more than double the gains by the XLF financial ETF.

Technological revolution

Technology's omnipresence should help drive that sector higher, Weiner said. While he's bullish on the entire group, there is one old-world name he likes that straddles the high-yield and tech world: IBM.

"We haven't owned IBM for a long, long time, but we got back into it in our income accounts," said Weiner. "You've got a 10-year Treasury at 2.5 percent. IBM's dividend – when we bought it, it was around 5 percent."

IBM now yields around 4.5 percent, more than double the dividend on the S&P 500. It has increased its dividend four times in the past five years.

"IBM has finally hit a place where they can start growing and offering more products," he said. "You can make money while you're waiting and still be in technology. We think that's a great place to be."

Disclosure: Ron Weiner personally owns shares of Illumina, PayPal and IBM. RDM Financial Group owns shares of PayPal and IBM.

Why Marijuana REITs Are One of the Best Investments Today

Legal marijuana is on the brink of explosive growth. But there are two key hurdles to overcome… and marijuana REITs like Innovative Industrial Properties (NYSE:IIPR) are solving them both.

For growers, it’s not easy to produce high-grade marijuana. Nor is it cheap — and getting that funding is tricky. Until the U.S. government removes marijuana from its list of Schedule I drugs — the ones considered most dangerous, like heroin — most banks want no part of it. (No matter how bright the future looks.)

For investors, the options have been limited, as that Schedule I label prohibits most U.S. companies from listing on the NYSE or NASDAQ.

Notice I said “most.”

IIPR stock is one of the few. Why can it list on those major stock exchanges? Because it never actually touches the plant. This is one of the smartest ways to invest in the exploding marijuana industry while it is still technically illegal federally.

Like all marijuana REITs, Innovative Industrial Properties simply plays landlord to the growers. Here’s how it works: IIPR buys freestanding properties from medical marijuana growers licensed by their respective states. It then leases the properties back to the growers. This gives those growers an infusion of capital to expand their operations and increase production. In return, the REIT receives regular rent payments under a long-term lease.

Pretty slick, huh? Wall Street is certainly taking notice:

Institutional investors now hold 59% of IIPR stock. Big players like Vanguard, Blackrock, and Wellington were largely the ones to cash in when shares hit a new 52-week high on the company’s March earnings report.

But marijuana REITs are also popular among investors like you and me — because of their unique business model, as well as their dividends.

Take a look at Innovative Industrial Properties’ earnings and you’ll see its rental income is growing exponentially. Then, because of the REIT structure, at least 90% of that gets passed along to shareholders. Innovative Industrial Properties paid a $0.35 dividend in Q4 — 40% higher than the previous year — and it’s already announced another dividend hike in Q1, to $0.45. That makes for a nice forward yield of over 2%. (This is even after the price of the stock nearly doubled since December.)

IIPR is a great stock, and now everybody is finding that out.

But I like to invest way BEFORE everyone jumps on board. Getting in before the crowd is how you make the big money. And that stock is up over 160% since I recommended it to my Investment Opportunities readers last August.

Back in college, I bought a brand-new apparel stock called True Religion for $0.20 — then it popped up above $20.

That’s actually what set me on my journey to New York City… my career with Charles Schwab, then my own firm, Penn Financial Group… and nowadays my newsletters, including Investment Opportunities.

I got people into Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) at $10. Now it’s over $550. We saw GrubHub (NYSE:GRUB) go from $35 to $140.

I like to wait a couple of months after the IPO before investing, to avoid early volatility. That’s what I advised for Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), which did in fact make an early stumble before it went into the stratosphere. (I’m still waiting for Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) to “show us the money.”)

And now, I’ve got my eye on a company called Treehouse.

The Next IIPR?

Treehouse is one of the marijuana REITs I think you should put on your radar. It’s an up-and-comer, and this one focuses on retail, in addition to cultivation facilities.

On Monday, Treehouse announced that it had raised $45.5 million in a private deal. (And that was from a “federally-insured commercial bank” — a great example of how marijuana REITs can break that funding barrier.) That’s after the REIT raised $133 million in its spinoff from MedMen Enterprises (OTCMKTS:MMNFF) in January.

Treehouse is looking to expand its lineup of cannabis retail and industrial facilities…

… and I also think it’s headed toward an IPO.

That’s right. Treehouse is still privately held, but maybe not for long.

Large amounts of private fundraising tend to indicate a company is building toward its “exit” in the form of a public offering. One study from PitchBook found that venture capital-backed companies were raising an average of $108 million before an IPO.

If the rumors start flying and you hear about Treehouse on TV, well… you heard it here first. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this REIT — and so should you.

Now, don’t get me wrong:

If Treehouse goes public, it wouldn’t necessarily be an automatic buy. There’s some homework to do first: make sure the fundamentals back up the hype. And the timing has to be right.

That’s all part of my Cannabis Cash Calendar system, which I designed specifically for marijuana IPOs. The early results are impressive, if I do say so myself, including an 80% gainer in less than four months.

I already have the date circled for my next recommendation — just two weeks away, on April 4.

You can get exclusive access to it as soon as it’s released to my Investment Opportunities readers. Click here to learn more about this opportunity and how to get on the list to be notified.

Even if you don’t know a thing about the marijuana markets… even if you’ve never bought a stock before. You could take just a small stake, and potentially multiply that over the next 12 months. Click here for more on this incredible trend.

Best Energy Stocks To Invest In 2019: Suncor Energy Inc.(SU)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Even though Canadian oil giant Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) has been a cash-generating machine for its investors in recent quarters, the company continues to struggle with one of its premier assets: Syncrude. The oil-sands mining and upgrading facilities for this massive project in Alberta have been shut down or not running at full capacity several times over the past few years, and it is keeping Suncor from realizing its full potential.

  • [By Jason Hall]

Canadian integrated oil giant Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) was one of the hardest-hit, with its stock price falling almost 35% over that period even as it continued to generate significant cash flows.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

It seems every quarter lately, Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) has had to deal with some grueling challenge affecting its bottom line -- whether it's the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta, the technical failures at its Syncrude oil sands upgrading facility, or the inability for other companies to build crude oil pipelines out of Alberta. This past quarter, the lack of pipelines really reared its head, and the price of Canadian crude oil slipped below $10 per barrel in the fourth quarter. But despite this problem and the ones that have preceded it, Suncor has somehow found a way to produce respectable results.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

While many large oil companies have recently reaffirmed their 2019 capital budgets, some smaller ones have started hitting the brakes. WPX Energy (NYSE:WPX), for example, slashed its 2019 spending plan amid the slump in oil prices. WPX Energy had expected to spend between $1.45 billion and $1.65 billion this year and had identified another $250 million to $350 million of additional opportunities it was pursuing. However, with oil prices crashing in recent months, WPX Energy reduced its budget 23% to a range of $1.1 billion to $1.275 billion. It's likely that more drillers will join WPX Energy and tap the brakes to better align spending with anticipated cash flows at lower oil prices, which could impact the oilfield service industry in the first half of 2019.

Stocks making the biggest moves premarket: Boeing, Tesla, General Electric, Facebook & more

Check out the companies making headlines before the bell:

General Electric — GE issued a 2019 outlook, saying it would earn an adjusted 50 cents to 60 cents per share for 2019, compared to the 70 cents a share consensus estimate. GE CEO Larry Culp said the company's challenges are "complex but clear" and that he expects 2020 and 2021 to be significantly better.

Boeing — Boeing remains on watch after the Federal Aviation Administration grounded its fleet of 737 MAX jets while it investigates the causes of two recent overseas crashes involving the jet. Boeing shares did rise Wednesday after falling for seven straight sessions.

Facebook — Facebook's user data deals are the subject of a criminal investigation by federal prosecutors, according to The New York Times. The paper said a grand jury has subpoenaed records from at least two well-known makers of smartphones and other devices.

Dollar General — The discount retailer reported adjusted quarterly profit of $1.84 per share, 4 cents a share below estimates. Revenue, however, did beat estimates, and a comparable-store sales increase of 4.0 percent was better than the 2.6 percent increase predicted by analysts surveyed by Refinitiv. The company also increased its quarterly dividend by 10 percent to 32 cents per share, and added $1 billion to its stock buyback program.

General Mills — The food producer was upgraded to "buy" from "hold" at Deutsche Bank, saying the company's core business has stabilized and that the opportunity represented by its Blue Buffalo pet products business remains underappreciated.

Apple — Apple was rated "outperform" in new coverage at Cowen, based largely on increasing contributions to earnings from Apple's services business.

MongoDB — MongoDB lost an adjusted 17 cents per share for its latest quarter, less than half the 38 cents a share loss that analysts had expected. The software company's revenue also beat forecasts, and it gave stronger-than-expected guidance for both the current quarter and the full year.

Tailored Brands — Tailored Brands reported a quarterly loss of 28 cents per share, a penny a share smaller than anticipated. The apparel retailer's revenue also fell short of Street forecasts. The parent of the Jos. A. Bank and Men's Wearhouse chains gave weaker-than-expected current-quarter guidance, saying comparable-store sales had dropped during the fourth quarter and that the trend had continued into 2019.

Johnson & Johnson — A cancer victim who had used Johnson & Johnson's talcum powder-based products was awarded $29 million by a California jury. J&J faces more than 13,000 talc-related lawsuits.

Genesco — The apparel seller earned an adjusted $2.18 per share for its latest quarter, missing the consensus estimate of $2.33 a share. Revenue and comparable-store sales missed estimates and Genesco issued a weaker-than-expected fiscal 2020 forecast.

Wells Fargo — CEO Tim Sloan received a 5 percent pay raise for 2018, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. That news comes a day after Sloan faced criticism at a congressional hearing over the bank's efforts to rebound from the 2016 customer account scandal.

Pandora Media — Pandora has begun selling ads that play only on smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home, according to The Wall Street Journal. The streaming music service has also been selling other specialized ad streams targeted at gaming consoles and smart TVs.

Tesla — Tesla will introduce its Model Y SUV today at an event near Los Angeles. Production is expected to begin sometime in 2020.

Verizon — Verizon plans to charge an extra $10 per month for customers of 5-G mobile service. It will be available only to unlimited data plan subscribers with compatible devices. Verizon is the first major U.S. mobile carrier to reveal 5-G pricing.

Delta Air Lines — Berkshire Hathaway has increased its stake in Delta, according to an SEC filing. A Berkshire subsidiary bought 6,500 additional Delta shares, increasing Berkshire's total Delta holding to just under 71 million shares.

Cloudera — Cloudera reported a quarterly loss of 15 cents per share, 4 cents a share wider than analysts had anticipated. The cloud software company's revenue exceeded Street forecasts, but its 2019 outlook was weaker than expected.

Shares of telecommunications service provider CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL) plummeted in Thursday trading -- down 12.1% as of 2:30 p.m. EST -- after the company reported fourth-quarter and full-year earnings last night.

On the one hand, CenturyLink's results weren't all that bad. Sales of $5.78 billion missed expectations by about $20 million, but pro forma earnings of $0.37 per share beat analyst estimates by a penny.

CenturyLink just dropped its dividend by half, and it's made a terrible mess. Image source: Getty Images.

So what

Viewed from another perspective, however, CenturyLink's results were just awful. Calculated according to GAAP accounting standards, CenturyLink lost $2.26 per share for the quarter, wiping out all profit earned earlier in the year and leaving CenturyLink with a $1.63-per-share loss for the year.

Advisors' Opinion:

And while offshore still has a ways to go, I think investors should do well to buy Ensco at current prices. At recent prices, its shares trade for about 24% of tangible book value. Furthermore, it's also a 23% discount to the book value of Rowan Companies (NYSE:RDC), which will merge with Ensco sometime in the first half of the year. It's a substantial discount to more typical book value multiples these companies have carried during healthy offshore drilling environments:

And while Ensco has taken its share of asset writedowns in recent years to decommission older, non-economical vessels, it has also been one of the biggest beneficiaries of consolidation. In 2017, it acquired Atwood Oceanics, a smaller company with a young, high-spec fleet of floating vessels, and more recently agreed to merge with Rowan Companies (NYSE:RDC), which has a high-quality fleet of jack-up rigs and a strong backlog of work for that fleet.

  • [By Jason Hall, Tyler Crowe, and Matthew DiLallo]

At the same time, there has been a tremendous amount of consolidation (like this and this and this), leaving fewer -- stronger -- companies operating just when work is starting to pick up. Top 5 Penny Stocks For 2019

tags:PTI,LUNA,BDL,UBOH,SMSI,

Zacks Investment Research downgraded shares of Pilgrim’s Pride (NASDAQ:PPC) from a buy rating to a hold rating in a research note issued to investors on Tuesday.

According to Zacks, “Over the past three months, Pilgrim’s Pride’s shares have underperformed the industry. The company’s first-quarter 2018 adjusted earnings of 53 cents per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. Elevated demand for plant-based protein products might dampen results of meat-product companies like Pilgrim’s Pride. Furthermore, prevalent headwinds like stiff industry rivalry remain causes of concern. However, successful integration activities of the Moy Park buyout will likely help in boosting the company’s European business, going forward. Moreover, premium brands like Del Dia will likely secure sturdier market response in the near term. The company’s unique portfolio strategy is also expected to strengthen its competency, moving ahead.”
