The ominous-sounding government database contains the names and Social Security numbers of more than 83 million Americans whose deaths have been reported to the Social Security Administration. Tax collectors, pension systems, insurance companies and credit reporting agencies use that data to prevent fraud.
But scammers have also used those Social Security numbers to file fraudulent tax returns for recently deceased people, costing the federal government millions. One recent audit found 19,000 fraudulent returns filed in the names of dead people in the 2011 tax year alone.
So as part of the budget deal in December, Congress voted to close public access to the data. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that limiting access to the file could save the government $786 million over 10 years money Congress was counting on to replace many of the budget cuts it enacted in 2011.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Investors have always been interested in stocks that pay dividends, but lately, low interest rates on bonds and other fixed-income investments have made solid dividend payers even more valuable. Among the most promising dividend stocks in the market is Cincinnati Financial (NASDAQ: CINF ) , and one big reason is that it is one of the few exclusive companies to make the list of Dividend Aristocrats. In order to become a member of this elite group, a company must have raised its dividend payouts to shareholders every single year for at least a quarter-century. Only a few dozen stocks manage to make the cut, and those that do tend to stay there for a long time.
