Hot Dividend Stocks For 2014

Every quarter, many money managers have to disclose what they've bought and sold, via "13F" filings. Their latest moves can shine a bright light on smart stock picks.

Today, let's look at Joel Greenblatt's Gotham Asset Management. It's of great interest to many investors because Greenblatt is the author of the well-regarded and best-selling The Little Book That Beats the Market and because his systemof seeking out companies with high returns on capital and hefty earnings yields. His "Magic Formula" has many fans. As my colleague Morgan Housel has noted, "The simple formula absolutely destroys market averages over time. Greenblatt backs this up with considerable statistical evidence."

The company's reportable stock portfolio totaled $2.0 billion in value as of March 31, 2013.

Interesting developments
So what does Gotham's latest quarterly 13F filing tell us? Here are a few interesting details:

The biggest new holdings are Seagate Technologyand Warner Chilcott. Other new holdings of interest include Tellabs (NASDAQ: TLAB  ) and Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN  ) . Tellabs offers a satisfying dividend yield of 3.7%, but the networking equipment maker has been facing some headwinds, such as the death of its CEO and the recent departure of its CFO. Its performance has been spotty, besting estimates in its fourth quarter but disappointing them in the recent first quarter.

Top 5 Clean Energy Stocks To Watch For 2015: Plum Creek Timber Company Inc.(PCL)

Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc. is a publicly owned real estate investment trust (REIT). The trust owns and manages timberlands in the United States. Its products include lumber products, plywood, medium density fiberboard, and related by-products, such as wood chips. The trust also focuses on mineral extraction and natural gas production, communication, and transportation. Plum Creek Timber Company was founded in 1989 and is based in Seattle, Washington.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Divine]

Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL  ) , which, like Weyerhaeuser, is also a REIT with a main focus on -- you guessed it -- timber products, fell 2.5% today. The uber-short-term performance of Plum Creek has also been dismal, with shares slumping more than 8% in the past five days alone. But just last week, shares reached a 52-week high, and why shouldn't they have? A recovery in the housing market is well under way; as the resurgence continues, companies such as Plum Creek Timber and Weyerhaeuser will be there to benefit.

Rayonier believes that its forest resources business is seeing "the early stages of an improving housing market" with profits "being reflected in increasing sawlog demand and prices." The pricing power at both homebuilders and forest product companies is a key sign of recovery. It's a trend that's likely to continue whenPlum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL  ) reports earnings later today. Investors have taken notice and appear to have already priced theseexceptionsinto the stock, as its shares are already up more than 20% year to date.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

This has trickled all the way down to the performance of forestry companies. Timber REIT Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL  ) saw its first-quarter earnings nearly double. Its business performance improved across the board as its timber segment saw revenue grow 9.7%, while its manufacturing segment saw a 13% increase and finally its real estate business improved revenue by 22%. Looking ahead, the company expects higher demand for both lumber and structural panels, which will positively impact prices for the foreseeable future. To take advantage of this, last month it restarted operations at one of its sawmills, which had been idle since 2009.

Shares of Rayonier have plunged 15% to $46.97 at 12.36 p.m., but its fall doesn’t seem to have damaged other timber companies. Weyerhaeuser (WY) has gained 3.7% to $31.43 after it reported a profit of 27 cents today, beating estimates of 21 cents. Plum Creek Timber (PCL) is little changed at $49.47 and Boise Cascade (BCC) has risen 1.1% to $27.83.

You don't have to be an expert technical analyst to see what's going on in shares of health care REIT HCP (HCP). This stock is in stuck in a textbook downtrending channel. Fundamentally, there's a lot to like about this stock, but HCP is a good example of why it's never a good idea to chase yield; HCP may have a 5.29% annual dividend payout, but shares have lost more than that in the last month alone.

HCP's price channel has provided traders with a high-probability range for shares since the middle of the year. Despite the last four attempts at pushing through trendline resistance, shares have been swatted down on each attempt. And while HCP has been turning higher in the last few sessions, investors should look at trendline resistance at $42 with a lot of skepticism. That's probably the worst possible time to be a buyer.

Instead, it makes sense to sell near the trendline for a most efficient exit in HCP. Yes, trendlines do eventually break, but getting in now is a big mistake. After all "this time it's different" are probably the most expensive four words in the English language. As long as shares stay within that channel, sell the bounce.

The company was founded in 1963 and is headquartered in Purchase, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more TAL International Group (NYSE: TAL  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong TAL International Group's competitive position could be.
