Hot Asian Companies To Invest In Right Now

October 25, 2013: U.S. markets opened higher Friday morning following good earnings reports Thursday night from some big names. The report on durable goods orders was disappointingand the consumer sentiment index also fell short of low expectations. European, Asian, and Latin American markets all closed mixed today.

Monday calendar includes the following scheduled data releases and events (all times Eastern):

9:10 a.m. – Industrial production 10:00 a.m. – Pending home sales index 10:30 a.m. – Dallas Fed manufacturing survey 11:30 a.m. – 3- and 6-month bill auctions 1:00 p.m. – 2-year note auction

The Fresh Market (TFM), has been rising off of a bottom in March. It recently went through a 'W' consolidation and jumped higher, but is now retesting the top of the 'W'. The relative strength index (RSI) has held the mid line during the pullback and remains bullish while the moving average convergence divergence indicator (MACD) is not as positive. A turn higher, back over 53.50 could be a catalyst for a long entry, but a fall under 52 sets a target for a measured move (MM) lower to 50. This stock does not report earnings until late August.

Fresh Market Inc.'s(TFM) fiscal third-quarter profit inched up 1.6% as top line was boosted by new store openings and rising demand at existing locations. But shares slid 15% to $42.96 in premarket trading, as growth for the period was weaker than analysts expected and the specialty grocer trimmed its full-year profit outlook.

The news was so good that Whole Foods' main national rival, The Fresh Market (NASDAQ: TFM  ) , got caught up in all the investor love, with its shares up 5%.

Arch Capital (ACGL)'s Dinos Iordanu recently described to our analysts how he met me in 2001. Before we invested in his business, we asked him all sorts of personal questions about how he came to America from Cyprus; whether or not his wife had a job; and how big was his house? He told our analysts that "Ron was trying to get a sense of me. He wanted to understand how I viewed risk. No one else asked us such questions. They were the right questions since you were investing in our business, which was assuming underwriting risk on your behalf. "We got it right with Dinos and have about quadrupled our money in the past twelve years, not exactly the most propitious time to invest in stocks! Of course, there can be no assurance that future investments will be as profitablelthough you can be assured that we will continue to work hard to try to achieve similar results.

For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. So far, so good. Less edifying, though, is the repeated contrast of Berkshire track record of profitability to State Farm…even though, as a mutual company, State Farm profitability goals are inherently different from for-profit insurers like Berkshire. It true that through year-end 2013, Berkshire underwriters have ow operated at an underwriting profit for eleven consecutive years, but so have ACE (ACE), American Financial (AFG), AmTrust Financial (AFSI), Arch Capital (ACGL), Chubb (CB), HCC (HCC), Progressive (PGR), RLI (RLI), and W.R. Berkley (WRB), any or all of whom provide a more meaningful comparison than contrasting Berkshire results to a company that not out to produce a profit in the first place.

Kodiak recently bought 42,000 acres in the productive Bakken region, upping its assets there by 27%, and adding thousands of new barrels of oil to its production levels. Bulls love Kodiak's rapid growth and see more room to grow. Bears worry that it might be too focused on the Bakken and not sufficiently diversified.

    1.Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  )
Few companies are growing oil production as fast as Kodiak Oil & Gas. Last year, the Bakken driller grew its oil production a staggering 250% as its total oil sales volume went from 1.34 million barrels in 2011 up to 4.7 million barrels last year. This surge was fueled by the $1.5 billion in capital the company spent on both drilling and acquisitions. Kodiak looks to spend about the same amount this year, as its capital plans call for $740 million to drill 75 wells, while Kodiak alsorecently announced that it was spending$660 million to acquire additional acreage and production in the play.
