Stephen Elopis still in the hunt apparently, and he will be rejoining Microsoft from Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) when the acquisition of the handset division closes. We have a hard time knowing if it is worth the risk of taking on a handset chief as the company’s full CEO. Nokia’s reputation has diminished handily, and the risk is that if a CEO replacement does not work out then it would look like a bonehead move that could have been avoided.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) announced a deal on Friday to equip every single flight attendant with a Nokia (NOK) Lumia 820 running the Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Phone operating system (OS). I was bursting with excitement, expecting Nokia's stock to fly higher on this news, but it barely reacted. The reason is amazingly none of the sell-side picked up on this news, and neither did any of the major financial news providers such as Bloomberg. Unsurprisingly, Nokia did not make an announcement so the sell-side in Europe, which is notoriously quiet on a lazy Friday afternoon in August, just did not pick up this important catalyst. Maybe the Street was too focused on trying to interpret the significance of Ballmer leaving Microsoft. Either way this news is hugely significant and a major positive indicator of the potential of the Microsoft Windows Phone OS as delivered by Nokia's Lumia phones for enterprise customers.

Unbelievably the above just happened with the latest August 27th sell side bear attack on Nokia (NOK) which called into question the company's cash profile and net cash position. Somehow this negative analysis completely excluded NSN. The latest report by a sell side firm is summarized here. How or why NSN would be excluded when it is fully owned by Nokia as from July 16th, 2013 is beyond me. The only reason I can think of is that the analyst has not gotten round to updating the Nokia model for the NSN deal and might even be inclined to await Nokia's presentation of the consolidated results.

Just a hobby
Having ended the year with less than a 3% share of the smartphone market, the Windows Phone franchise remains a hobby that will likely have little impact on Microsoft's stock price for the time being. However, this hasn't stopped Microsoft and Nokia (NYSE: NOK ) from pursuing growth in emerging markets, where smartphone saturation remains low. Currently, Nokia accounts for nearly 75% of Windows Phone devices worldwide, indicating the importance of Nokia's success for Microsoft's smartphone ambitions.

AP WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Thursday chose two old friends with business executive experience for top posts on his economic team, naming longtime fundraiser Penny Pritzker to the Commerce Department and adviser Michael Froman as U.S. Trade Representative. Pritzker, a Hyatt Hotels (H) heiress, businesswoman and philanthropist, is Obama's pick to fill a Cabinet post that has been vacant since former Secretary John Bryson resigned after he said he suffered a seizure that led to a series of traffic collisions. Froman is one of Obama's law school classmates and senior economic advisers who previously worked as an executive at Citigroup Inc. (C). The Cabinet-level trade post performs as the administration's top adviser and negotiator on international trade. If confirmed by the Senate, Froman would replace Ron Kirk, a former Dallas mayor who stepped down as trade representative in February after serving in the post throughout Obama's first term. Obama made the announcements in the White House Rose Garden just before departing for Mexico. The nominations, which require Senate confirmation, complete Obama's picks to fill his second-term Cabinet. Obama said the two will help fulfill his top priority to grow the economy and create middle class jobs. "I intend to work both of them to the bone as soon as they are official," Obama said to laughter from a crowd that included the nominees' families and administration staff. If confirmed, Pritzker would become the fourth woman serving as secretary in Obama's current Cabinet. She also would be the wealthiest in the Cabinet by far, with Forbes estimating her net worth at $1.85 billion and ranking her as the 277th richest American. Pritzker is a lifelong Chicagoan who has known Obama since the 1990s and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for both his presidential campaigns. She was his finance chairwoman in 2008, served as co-chair of Obama for America 2012 and gave $250,000 to help put on his inaugu
