5 Best European Stocks For 2014

In 2009, the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) teamed up to provide an €85 billion bailout package to Ireland, which was suffering from a severe banking crisis at the time. As in many other countries, Irish banks had become dependent on short-term funding and excessive borrowing to fuel the country’s rapid growth during its “Celtic Tiger” period which ran from 1995 – 2006, with much of the capital coming from abroad.

But two weeks ago, the Irish government announced that it would exit the EU-IMF program, eschewing access to the region’s precautionary credit line program as it reenters the global credit markets in February. It will also repay the loans it has already received by 2042.

Many have marveled at the Irish decision to operate without a safety net, but the government has built up a cash reserve of €20 billion as it raises money in the bond markets in recent months. In fact the Irish sovereign yield of about 4.5 percent—slightly above the yield on German bunds but well below that of Greek sovereigns—was a major driver of the decision to exit the bailout program. Its current cash on hand should allow the government to meet its financial obligations through 2015.

With dividend stocks, however, you have no guarantee that there's no assurance that you'll receive a dividend. For instance, Spanish telecom company Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) chose last year not to pay its planned dividend for 2012, saying it would restore half the payout later this year. Even stalwart blue-chips General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) and Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) had to reduce their dividends dramatically during the financial crisis, and even now, they haven't risen back to their pre-crisis levels.

No go as yet for AT&T
As for U.S. No. 2 wireless company AT&T, last week Bloomberg reported knowledgeable people saying it has been holding talks with Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) to buy a significant part of the Spanish telecom, or some of its other foreign assets.

    Bowing out of Egypt
It's also noteworthy that Egypt shares a western border with Libya, which is a significant producer, but where chaos and contretemps also reign. Is it any wonder, then, that Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) announced on Tuesday that it will unload its Egyptian downstream operations, including 66 service stations and a couple of oil depots, to Total (NYSE: TOT  ) ? The French company is also buying the retail assets in the land of the Sphinx from Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-B  ) . Perhaps it knows something of which the rest of us are unaware.

    Cost of capital is key
The other differentiator Werner thinks SunPower has over SolarCity is in cost of capital. Total (NYSE: TOT  ) owns 66% of SunPower and the oil giant allows SunPower to borrow at lower costs than SolarCity, or at least that's the theory.
